Where the road less travelled becomes the journey.

Day 3 – the road to Tuk

Today we left Williams Lake and headed towards Prince George. We’ve decided that the area is so lovely that We’ll come explore PG south as a trip on its own.

When we left, we backtracked a wee bit to Lac la Hache to find another little place we saw someone rave about. The truth is, when we drove past it the day before and saw the sign and the building… we kind of chuckled and said, “Yeah right”.
You know the saying, never judge a book by its cover?
Yes, it was one of those places. Frank’s Custom Meats sits on the side of the highway, and honestly – it wasn’t all that inviting from the outside.

However, after hearing someone rave about the beef jerky, we had to check it out.

What we found inside was a treasure trove of all kinds of deliciousness.

They had coolers full of fresh and frozen meat, pepperoni, and jerky.

He’s pretty pleased with his choices!

As we drove through Lac la Hache the second time, it gave us a little more time to appreciate the site. It features significant local heritage tied to the Cariboo Gold Rush and early pioneer settlement. Many Historic sites and homesteads have been preserved. The log homes from this time of plenty are stunning. We are looking forward to spending more time in the area in the future.

It’s around this area that we notice the change in vegetation. Trees seem a little more ‘weathered,’ and they are skinny. I’m always fascinated by how differently the trees and landscapes change in the different areas of the province based on weather, especially colder and less rainy than the lush oasis we come from.

We travelled through Quesnel and stopped for some essentials, then found our way just outside of Prince George to go to another camping spot. I love that we only travel a few hours a day so we don’t feel like this is a race.

We had a quick stop at a rest stop for the dogs and not far from the road, we saw trees moving… so Eric took a distant peek, and yup, it was a bear having a snack. That’s 3 for 3!

We went off the beaten path about 9 km from the highway to tonight’s spot. Again – it doesn’t disapoint.
The goal is to try to use the off-grid, remote camping sites this whole trip.
